Films for Future (F3) project seeks to end packaging waste with sustainable cellulose-based films.
Films for future (F3) project, launched in 2022, is a collaborative effort between VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, LUT University, and 34 industrial partners. Funded by the EU’s ERDF funding programme, this initiative aims to develop a sustainable, cellulose-based film alternative to replace plastic films currently used in packaging.
Plastic waste is a significant environmental concern, and the F3 project seeks to address this issue by providing a viable, eco-friendly alternative. The goal is to create a readily recyclable cellulose-based film that fulfills the requirements outlined in the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive.
This novel bio-based and biodegradable film has the potential to revolutionise the packaging sector by reducing reliance on traditional fossil-based plastic materials.
Recent advancements in cellulose film technology made in the F3 project have opened new possibilitiesfor sustainable packaging. VTT’s innovative cellulose film production process enables the creation of transparent, biodegradable films that can be seamlessly integrated with paper-based materials. By simplifying packaging designs and improving recyclability, this technology offers a promising solution to the global plastic waste crisis.
In the final year of the project, F3 will continue to push the boundaries of sustainable packaging innovation. By thoroughly evaluating the performance of novel cellulose-based materials and exploring new applications, F3 aims to create a positive impact on the environment and drive the transition towards a more circular economy.
