What are High Temperature Superconductors (HTS)?

What are High Temperature Superconductors (HTS)?

High-temperature superconductors are ceramic materials that conduct DC electricity with zero resistance below temperatures of roughly 20–77 K, a far cry above the ~4 K needed by low-temperature superconductors (LTS). This higher operating temperature simplifies cryogenics, letting HTS magnets reach strong fields without the hefty overhead of liquid helium. While Bi-2223 formed the basis for early HTS tapes, many modern designs now harness ReBCO (rare-earth barium copper oxide) for its superior in-field current density and mechanical robustness.

Key benefits of HTS

Key benefits of HTS

  • Higher Field Capability: Up to 20 T+ with fewer helium constraints than LTS or copper electromagnets.
  • Thermal Stability: Slower quench propagation plus high stability gives ample time for detection and safe shutdown.
  • Lower Total Costs: Reduced cooling needs translate to simpler infrastructure and lower ongoing expenses.
  • Versatile & Scalable: From compact research magnets to pilot-scale industrial or fusion systems, HTS opens doors not viable with older technologies.
