Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has launched tests of the BYD electric bus model B19, aiming to revolutionise urban transit.
This week, TMB started evaluating the articulated BYD electric bus on major routes in the city. The primary focus is on simulating operations on lines H16, V15, and H12, which already feature electric buses.
The BYD B19, with its impressive 18.75-metre length and 140-passenger capacity, promises to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of Barcelona’s public transportation network.
Two-phase trial
The trial period for the BYD electric bus runs from today until next Wednesday, 7 August. During this phase, TMB’s technical team will simulate various routes, predominantly on lines H16, V15, and H12.
Depending on operational feasibility, additional simulations may extend to lines X1, 46, 67, and 150. This comprehensive testing aims to evaluate the performance of the eBus across different urban routes and traffic conditions.
BYD B19 specifications
The BYD B19 stands out with its advanced battery capacity of 563 kWh, offering a remarkable range of approximately 470 kilometres.
The bus measures 18.75 metres in length, 2.55 metres in width, and 3.30 metres in height, with an extended height of 3.48 metres in its pantograph version.
Weighing 29.5 tonnes, the B19 is built to endure the demands of urban transit.
Safety and accessibility features
Safety is paramount in the B19 model, equipped with EBS and ASR braking systems and safety certifications, including R66 (rollover resistance), R29, and R93 (frontal impacts), alongside R155/156 for the cybersecurity of vehicle computer systems.
The bus’s design also supports multiple configurations to optimise performance.
In terms of accessibility, the BYD electric bus incorporates features to accommodate all passengers, including access ramps and spaces for wheelchairs, as well as aids for visually and hearing-impaired individuals.
The bus features a 2-2-2-2 door configuration, enhancing passenger flow with two front access points and two additional doors behind the joint.
The introduction of the BYD electric bus to Barcelona’s streets marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and efficient public transport system.
As the trials progress, the feedback and performance data gathered will be crucial in determining the broader implementation of BYD electric buses in the city.
This initiative aligns with Barcelona’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting green transportation solutions.
