The Government of Canada has announced the publication of the Blue Economy Regulatory Roadmap, a strategic plan to enhance the country’s oceans.
Announced by Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, at the H2O conference in Halifax, the Blue Economy Regulatory Roadmap will support innovation and economic growth in Canada’s oceans.
Following months of public consultation, the roadmap’s development was led by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) in partnership with Natural Resources Canada, Transport Canada, Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, and the National Research Council of Canada.
The plan outlines strategic areas to accelerate the development of Canada’s ocean economy, a move that will generate vast environmental and economic benefits.
Lebouthillier explained: “Our oceans hold immense potential to combat climate change and drive sustainable economic growth.
“This Roadmap marks a significant stride towards eliminating barriers for businesses that rely on the ocean to grow in a sustainable way, which will deliver widespread benefits for all Canadians.”
Importance of Canada’s oceans
Oceans are crucial for the livelihoods of communities throughout Canada, offering potential climate solutions, increased opportunities for coastal and inland areas, and a more sustainable and prosperous blue economy.
In 2023, Canada exported over $7.6bn worth of fish and seafood to 115 countries, making these commodities among the country’s largest food exports.
To transition to a sustainable blue economy, Canada needs healthy ocean spaces. The roadmap aims to achieve lasting results by promoting a Government-wide approach that emphasises the importance of ocean protection for prosperous communities and livelihoods.
Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, added: “Oceans are among Canada’s most important natural resources.
“This Roadmap will allow us to better protect our ocean waters and industries. In turn, these new protections will support sustainable economic growth and innovation while prioritising the health, safety, and security of Canadians and the environment they value and depend on.”
Transforming Canada’s blue economy
The roadmap outlines the actions Canada will take to foster innovation and economic growth in the country’s oceans, focusing on five key areas:
- Marine renewable energy and environmental protection
- Marine spatial planning
- Maritime autonomous surface ships
- Ocean technology
- Sustainable fishing gear and practices
This development marks a pivotal moment in Canada’s commitment to sustainable ocean management.
By implementing this roadmap, Canada is poised to unlock the vast potential of its oceans, fostering a prosperous and sustainable blue economy.
