CATCO2NVERS: Creating added-value chemicals from bio-industrial CO2 emissions

The CATCO2NVERS project works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) through three catalytic processes (electrochemical, enzymatic, and thermochemical) and transform CO2 emissions into five chemicals.

Launched in 2021, CATCO2NVERS is a Horizon 2020 research and innovation project which aims to create added-value chemicals from bio-industrial CO2 emissions using integrated catalytic technologies.

The CATCO2NVERS project is led by the Fundación Tecnológica Advantx (FUNDITEC), which promotes the generation of knowledge and its application for the development and strengthening of the competitive capacity of companies and organisations in the field of technology and innovation.

What is CATCO2NVERS?

The core purpose of CATCO2NVERS is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the biobased industry by developing five innovative and integrated technologies based on three catalytic processes:  electrochemical, enzymatic, and thermochemical.

The project objective is to transform waste CO2 from two biobased industries into five added-value chemicals: glyoxylic acid, lactic acid, furan dicarboxylic methyl ester, cyclic carbonated fatty acid methyl esters, and bio-methanol, with application in the chemical, cosmetics, and plastic industries.

The vision of the project centres around two main axes:

• Developing and applying catalyst-based technologies for CO2 conversion to added-value chemicals
• Validating technologies at technology readiness level (TRL) 5 with industrial synthetic off-gases, and providing sustainability and proofing socioeconomic and industrial feasibility

CATCO2NVERS will process biobased products replacing fossil material with zero or negative greenhouse gas emissions, which will contribute to setting up sound business models involving all the value chain stakeholders and bringing down environmental impacts and production costs.

In summary, CATCO2NVERS is focused on reducing industrial CO2 emissions while exploring new procedures to produce bioproducts. With this aim, a bottom-up approach is used by the design and development of innovative catalytic technologies for the valorisation of CO2 in the fabrication of different biobased products, including monomers for bioplastics production, using CO2 streams from biorefineries.
