EU invests €422m to expand alternative fuels infrastructure

In a significant move towards greener transportation, the European Commission has selected 39 groundbreaking projects across the EU to expand alternative fuels infrastructure.

These projects will receive a total investment of €422m through the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF), reinforcing the EU’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality.

This substantial financial boost aims to accelerate the transition to cleaner and more sustainable transport options.

Apostolos Tzitzikostas, EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, commented: “The 39 projects we are supporting today will accelerate the deployment of critical recharging and refuelling infrastructure needed for our expanding zero-emission fleets.

“Together, they will add nearly 5,000 new charging points, including 626 mega-watt chargers, helping citizens choose zero-emission vehicles and contribute to a cleaner environment.”

Key investments in clean transport solutions

The selected projects will drive the deployment of essential infrastructure for alternative fuels.

A significant portion of the funding will support the installation of 2,500 public electric recharging points for light-duty vehicles and 2,400 for heavy-duty vehicles along the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Additionally, 35 hydrogen refuelling stations will be constructed to serve cars, trucks, and buses, further promoting the use of hydrogen as a viable alternative fuel.

Ports and airports are also set to benefit from this initiative. The plan includes the electrification of ground-handling services at eight airports, reducing emissions from airport operations.

Meanwhile, nine ports will be equipped with onshore power installations, enabling docked ships to run on cleaner energy sources instead of conventional fuels.

In a major step towards decarbonising the shipping industry, two ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities will be developed to provide sustainable fuel alternatives for maritime transport.

These strategic investments align with the EU’s broader goals of strengthening energy security, enhancing industrial competitiveness, and fostering innovation in the alternative fuels sector.

Why expanding alternative fuels infrastructure is crucial

The expansion of alternative fuels infrastructure is vital for Europe’s shift toward sustainable transport.

The lack of widespread, accessible fuelling and charging stations has long been a barrier to the adoption of cleaner energy solutions.

By investing in large-scale infrastructure projects, the EU is actively addressing this challenge, ensuring that businesses and individuals can confidently transition to alternative fuel-powered vehicles.

Expanding alternative fuels infrastructure will significantly reduce carbon emissions, playing a crucial role in the EU’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Improved air quality is another key benefit, as electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles will help decrease pollution levels in cities.

Furthermore, developing diverse energy sources enhances energy independence, reducing Europe’s reliance on fossil fuels and improving economic stability.

Investment in this sector also stimulates job creation, research, and technological advancements, fostering a competitive European green technology industry.

The road ahead for sustainable mobility

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility operates on a rolling call for proposals, allowing for continuous funding of innovative projects.

The latest call, launched on 29 February 2024, has already completed its first evaluation round. The next funding cut-off is set for 11 June 2025, with €578m still available for future projects.

The EU’s commitment to alternative fuels infrastructure marks a significant step toward a greener, more resilient transport network. These investments will help accelerate the adoption of electric, hydrogen, and renewable fuels while supporting industries in meeting stringent emissions targets.

As AFIF continues to fund transformative projects, the future of European transportation looks cleaner, more efficient, and increasingly sustainable.
