ReFuels and partners’ HyHAUL green hydrogen project has been awarded more than £30m from the Department for Transport and Innovate UK to introduce the roll-out of hydrogen fuel cell trucks.
Led by Protium and Marubeni Europower Ltd, the HyHAUL green hydrogen project brings together the long-distance hydrogen HGV value chain. This includes green hydrogen generation, hydrogen logistics, refuelling infrastructure providers, and multiple fuel cell HGV manufacturers.
HyHAUL will initially roll out 30 hydrogen fuel cell HGVS to haulage operators primarily operating along the M4 corridor by 2026. The project has the further goal to deploy 300 vehicles by 2030.
The funding awarded to the project is part of the UK Government’s zero-emission HGV and infrastructure demonstrator programme.
ReFuels’ goals for the future
ReFuels’ subsidiary CNG Fuels is a partner of the HyHAUL project along with Scania, NRG Riverside, and Reynolds Logistics.
CNG Fuels operates 12 public access stations fuelling renewable biomethane (Bio-CNG) on major trucking routes in the UK. There is a potential to expand this to include hydrogen and electricity for zero-emission mobility.
The target is to have 30 to 40 stations across the UK by the end of 2026. The company’s long term ambition is to become Europe’s leading integrated supplier of alternative fuels for commercial fleets.
