Speira’s sustainability label maximises resource efficiency and minimises carbon footprint

At Speira, sustainability and transparency are two sides of the same coin. We want to make it easy for our customers to decide on the lowest-carbon, most-circular aluminium.

Well-informed decisions are the best, so we are transparent and consistent about the research, decisions, and convictions guiding our product design.

With our new sustainability label, RIVOS, we maximise resource efficiency and minimise the carbon footprint of our products.

It combines external scrap and low-carbon primary metal, tailored to regional opportunities for using renewable energies, thus raising synergies and bringing us and our customers another step closer to net zero.

Speira’s commitment to environmental sustainability

RIVOS is our label for aluminium produced with particularly low emissions, reflecting our commitment to environmental stewardship.

By combining efficient production methods, recycled content, and renewable energy sources, RIVOS products are designed to minimise carbon footprints while maintaining the highest quality and durability standards.

Key initiatives include:

  • Labels products with a carbon footprint of max. 4.5 t CO2 / t Al
  • We are determined to reach 0.5 t CO2 / t Al and know it can be done
  • Combines low CO2 primary aluminium, the use of external scrap and regional opportunities for sustainable energy
  • Third-party certified for total transparency

Reframing resources: The meaning behind the synergy

‘Reframing resources’ and ‘Thinking in life cycles’ are slogans that truly encapsulate Speira’s mission and the innovative approach we take to minimise emissions.

They are catchy phrases and represent our commitment to a sustainable future through responsible resource management and lifecycle thinking.

The secret behind our RIVOS products lies in a threefold synergy effect that sets us apart in the industry. The first two are a high proportion of external scrap and low-carbon primary metal, significantly lowering our footprint.

The third element is leveraging regional conditions to generate resource-efficient and sustainable energy.

In Norway, for instance, we harness the power of fjords and waterfalls to produce hydropower, a clean and renewable energy source for our production processes. The inspiration for RIVOS, derived from the Latin word for ‘river’, reflects this deep connection to responsible energy use.

Through these integrated efforts, we aim to lead the way in sustainable aluminium production without compromising quality. RIVOS isn’t just a product label; it’s a testament to our dedication to creating a circular world that works.

RIVOS: A significant milestone on the way to net zero

We are continuously reducing the CO2 footprint of our rolled products, striving to make significant progress in sustainability. With RIVOS, we are taking a crucial step closer to achieving net-zero emissions. The label clearly shows the remaining carbon intensity, providing transparency and assurance to our customers.

RIVOS products are designed to minimise our carbon footprint and significantly reduce the environmental impact on our customers and their end consumers. By choosing RIVOS, companies can demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and contribute to building a circular world that works.

Complementing the circularity focus

Recycling aluminium is remarkably efficient, saving up to 95% of the energy compared to primary production. Here, Speira’s first sustainability label comes into play, closing the circle: ORBIS, Latin for ‘circle’, is based on the closed-loop concept and stands for maximum transparency.

Our approach to the rather vague definition of recycled content is sharp: Only external scrap counts and contributes to recycled content.

We differentiate between internal scrap that has been kept in our value chain for internal reprocessing and scrap from external sources outside Speira (including our value chain with our joint venture operations) without accounting for emissions that occurred somewhere in the history of this metal.

This way, we aim to track the physical reality of emissions as closely as possible.

Ultimately, our primary goal is to reduce carbon emissions. The methods we adopt, grounded in established standards, to quantify and convey the advantages of aluminium recycling are essential tools in our collective mission to lower carbon footprints.

ORBIS is our label for mainly sustainably produced aluminium solutions with a high level of external scrap and represents our commitment to environmental responsibility. Whether you’re looking for high-quality aluminium solutions or aiming to reduce your carbon footprint, ORBIS offers innovative and eco-friendly options tailored to meet your needs.
