The UK Government have announced over £190m to help industry cut emissions as they transition to clean energy.
Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Lord Callanan has announced 12 winners from the Local Industrial Decarbonisation Plan competition. The winners will benefit from a share of up to £6m to cut their emissions and work with technical advisors to adopt measures such as hydrogen and carbon capture.
In particular, the funding will target projects outside of the UK’s major industrial areas, as around 55% of the country’s industrial emissions are caused by companies in dispersed locations.
Plans to open a new phase of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund
The government also announced plans to open a new phase of the Industrial Energy Transformation Fund later this month for a further £185m. This will help companies transition towards cleaner and more secure energy, backing measures like replacing inefficient equipment and switching to hydrogen.
The funding will ensure that businesses are supported in the transition to net zero, securing green industrial jobs for the future.
Sectors eligible to apply include manufacturing, recycling, controlled environment horticulture, industrial laundries, and textile renting facilities.
Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance Lord Callanan said: “With over £190m available for businesses to make the move to cleaner, cheaper energy – and with 12 projects benefiting directly today – we are delivering the support they need to decarbonise.”
Funding winners will cut emissions
Amongst the winners is Shoreham Port Industrial Cluster, an established cluster with 175 businesses based on the 110-acre site. It will explore ways to cut emissions and improve local air quality by working with local councils.
The Industrial Decarbonisation for Northern Ireland will develop plans to help local businesses increase their productivity whilst cutting emissions.
Decarbonising the Midlands Aerospace Cluster is another winner who will work with key players in the region’s aerospace supply chain to identify manufacturing processes that release greenhouse gas emissions.
The fund will offer support for businesses to switch to more energy-efficient technologies.
The announcements are part of the government’s commitment to spend more than £12bn on energy efficiency by 2028. This will help households and businesses to benefit from lower bills and cleaner energy.
