The Ultimate Battery Company recognised for a battery technology breakthrough

The Ultimate Battery Company (UBC) has announced its recent victory at the Defense Manufacturing Technology Achievement Award (DMTAA) at the Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) 2023.

The Ultimate Battery Company, as part of the DLA Battery Network (BATTNET) Program, collaborated with the US Army Ground Vehicle Systems Center (GVSC) Project Office to develop and demonstrate that the use of a conductive polymer as the substrate (plate) in bipolar battery architecture is a breakthrough in producing lightweight, powerful, robust and long life-cycle batteries at a very competitive value.

This development was critical to replace the traditional lead-acid outdated battery technology, which involves complex manufacturing and is limited in energy and cycle life.

This enhancement reduces weight by more than 37%, has 10% more power, reduces procurement costs, and increases operational capability.

A huge battery technology innovation

The Ultimate Battery Company’s groundbreaking project, ‘Powerful Lightweight Lead Polymer Bipolar Batteries for Military Vehicles’, has been recognised under the Supply Chain Improvement category, marking a significant milestone in defence manufacturing technology and innovation.

This recognition underscores our unwavering commitment to innovation and excellence in serving the needs of the defence sector.

UBC’s COO Malcolm Earp travelled to Nashville to collect the award on behalf of the company and stated, “Our team, led by Founder & CEO Maurizio Cunningham-Brown, CTO Dr Keith Ellis, CMO Dave Sweeney and myself, collaborated with significant partners including DLA ManTech, Army GVSC Engineers, and the JMH Group, to deliver a transformative battery technology that promises enhanced performance and reliability for military applications.”

He added: “This award is a testament to the collective expertise and dedication of our UK team and our technical partners based in the UK, Italy, Belgium, and Luxembourg.

“We are deeply honoured to be acknowledged for our contributions that align with the DoD ManTech vision of a responsive, environmentally sustainable world-class manufacturing capability, and we are rising to this by establishing our facility in Thurcroft, South Yorkshire, UK.”

The Ultimate Battery Company’s Duophasic® battery technology

The patented Duophasic® Lead Carbon battery technology developed by UBC represents a significant leap forward in energy storage solutions. Using proprietary ultra-conductive polymer plate technology, UBC has created more compact and lighter batteries, increasing their energy capacity compared with standard lead acid batteries.

The result is a product that tackles the persistent problem of bulky and heavy energy storage by reducing material usage and, consequently, costs, which is particularly beneficial in the automotive industry where lighter starter batteries can significantly cut CO2 emissions.

Further bolstering the appeal of electric vehicles (EVs), UBC’s patented MotoFLO® technology, built on the Duophasic® architecture, is poised to revolutionise the market. This technology allows EVs to travel over 400 miles on a mere five-minute recharge, using ‘off-peak’ pre-charged electrolytes as a reusable fuel. This effectively addresses range anxiety and charge time concerns and overcomes the limits of the electricity grid infrastructure.

It stands as a catalyst for the transition away from fossil fuels, with the potential to drastically reduce CO2 emissions and hasten the journey towards Net Zero.

“Our Duophasic® battery technology is not just a step but a giant leap towards a more practical, safe and efficient battery technology,” said Maurizio Cunningham-Brown, CEO of UBC.

“With MotoFLO®, we’re not just enhancing electric vehicles; we’re empowering a global shift to cleaner air and a healthier planet, cutting down CO2 emissions drastically and saving millions of lives affected by pollution-related diseases.

“As we celebrate this milestone, UBC reaffirms its dedication to advancing battery technology for the betterment of our military forces, the commercial markets and the environment. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the JDMTP and all involved in the DMTAA for this distinguished recognition.”
