USask breaks record with highest-ever annual research funding

The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has achieved a milestone by securing the highest amount of research funding in a single year in its history.

This remarkable $417m research funding achievement underscores the quality and breadth of research activities conducted across the campus.

Peter Stoicheff, USask President, explained: “USask faculty, staff and students continue to excel in their research, scholarly and artistic work activity, reflected in this record-setting year of $417m in funding.

“This new achievement is a reminder that through innovative research across a very broad range of disciplines, USask is making good on its aspiration to be the university the world needs.”

Key factors behind the record research funding

Several factors contributed to USask’s unprecedented success. The university benefited from numerous large-scale, interdisciplinary research grants provided by provincial and federal funding agencies alongside industry partners.

Additionally, there was a notable increase in Tri-Council funding, which includes grants and support from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Collaborative efforts and diverse sources

The record research funding also reflects increased financial support from other government, international, and industry sources.

These funds were secured through the collaborative efforts of USask’s Government Relations and University Relations bodies, emphasising the university’s strong network and partnerships.

Wide-ranging impact across the university

The research funding is distributed across all USask colleges, affiliated research centres, and a variety of expertise areas.

This financial boost supports both new and ongoing research projects, enhancing the university’s research infrastructure and ecosystem.

This investment ensures that USask continues to be at the forefront of innovative research and development.

Baljit Singh, PhD, USask Vice-President Research, added: “Crossing the threshold of $400m in awarded research funding in a single year for the first time shows the strength of USask’s continually growing research landscape.

“This success is a testament to the researchers, staff, and faculty who have worked hard in our pursuit of innovation in the heart of Saskatchewan.

“The sky is truly the limit for both new and existing research, scholarly and artistic work on this campus and in this province, and I am excited to keep this momentum moving forward into the years to come.”
